Control Presentation from another computer

Main Post:

I have a strange request from one of my user. She is asking if she can connect her laptop for the presentation of her powerpoint but control it from another device. She wants to look at her notes from her phone and be able to advance to the next slide from her phone so that she can walk around while presenting. Do you have any suggestions on how this can be accomplished.

Lots of phone apps to choose from for this. Here's one

Oral Presentation vs Poster in a Computer Science conference

Main Post:

My paper got accepted as a short paper and was assigned to a 20 minutes presentation with the option to convert it to a poster presentation. The paper has a summarised version of my master's work so it is not a work in progress. However, my supervisor is encouraging me to do it as a poster presentation to talk to more people about my work and since it is my first time at an international conference.

Do you think it will be different, will I be missing on something if I did a poster instead of an oral presentation (CV wise maybe)? Keeping in mind that not all short papers get accepted to do an oral presentation, some only get accepted as a poster only.

She is saying that last year, she presented two papers, one as a presentation and one as a poster, and she said that she got more feedback presenting a poster and she mingled more because of it, while in the presentation only 10 attendees were there (due to parallel sessions) and most of them were students.

So your opinion is much appreciated.

Generally presentations are considered more "prestigious" in that they look better on a resume. However, posters can be a really good way to network, since it encourages people to stop by and talk in a more relaxed format. You can't really go wrong with either, but if you just want the best CV item the presentation probably looks slightly better.

PowerPoint formatting looks fine on my computer but messed up when I view it elsewhere

Main Post:

Hey all,

First off thank you for taking the time to read and respond to this.

I am using a PowerPoint presentation to build a basic “book” which is basically all our new hire orientation presentations in a portrait format and with more information than the presentation slides.

The portrait book presentation looks great, has correct formatting, pictures are correct transparency, it prints great, etc, but when loaded into a different laptop or computer the format is janky, with pictures no longer transparent, text extended off the page, etc.

What could be causing this issue?

I’ve tried converting the PowerPoint to a PDF but the quality of the PDF leaves a lot to be desired.

Any thoughts?

One issue that I think of, is that you maybe use a non-standard font in your presentation? On your pc, where this font is installed, it will look fine, on other pc, where this font is not installed, it will not look ok.

Solution for this, is to include the font in your presentation... Check the options while saving your presentation.

Export to PDF is another solution, but I see this did not work great for you

What are some good, simple presentation topics about computer science?

Main Post:

I have to hold a short presentation (only 10 minutes) about something concerning computer science, in my second language. I can choose the subject freely, but it can't be about a person. I cannot for the life of me come up with a topic. Does anybody have an example of a relative simple topic that I can present? (Bearing in mind I'm presenting in a language I'm not good at)

I'm getting a bit desperate:)

For example, someone that had a presentation about math talked about the Pythagorean theorem

How ChatGPT - aguable our first AI program that lives up to its name - is a direct evolution of the models that predicted the next word for SMS texting ( n-gram models). At a high level thd story is simple and should be easy to research.

You could do a lot with pictures and diagrams too.

Inactive limit and Windows 10 Presentation Mode

Main Post:

Hi, me again,

This question sounds weird to me, even though I'm the one asking it, but I need to know anyway.
I work for a higher education school. At the moment, teachers attach their personally assigned laptops to a big monitor to present their presentation or show their videos. But now, management has asked us to install those small 1 liter PC's behind the monitors so students can log in with their domain account and present if necessary.

We apply a 10 minute inactive limit through GPO. However, we would like that to be ignored when Presentation Mode is enabled (Yes, I've tweaked the registry to allow the use of the Mobility Center on Desktop PCs). These computers still just seem to lock themselves after 10 minutes, even if Presentation Mode is enabled. As far as I am aware, putting the computer in Presentation Mode should keep the computer awake. Screensaver has been disabled.

Is Machine inactivity limit dominant over Presentation Mode? If so, is there a way to let Windows ignore the Machine inactivity limit when Presentation Mode is enabled?

I've been searching the web and came across a few pages on stackoverflow regarding presentation mode, but none of those pages gave me the solution I needed.

Any help is appreciated.

SOLVED

Credits to u/Background-Look-63 for the answer. Machine inactivity limit ignores Presentation Mode. If you set the screen saver, it's not ignored.

Figure out what the regkey is for your 10 min machine time out is. Microsoft publishes a excel file for all settings in the admx (gpo settings). Create a security group in active directory called something like presentation workstations or whatever you want. In group policy, setup a gpp (group policy preference) that recreates the regkey that sets the 10 min time out and use item level targeting to exclude any PCs that are in the security group that you’ve created. Remove the gpo settings that you used previously.

Can't download powerpoint presentation with transitions

Main Post:

I want to download and convert a powerpoint slide show to MP4 so I can use it in a youtube video. It's not for anything educational and is supposed to just be used as an editing trick. I can't manage to get the mp4 with the transition in it, though. Help?

Top Comment:

A couple things you could try that may or may not work: Try saving it as a different file name and then try exporting it again, Try it on a different computer. OR, record it via screen capture software instead of exporting via PPT. I have never had a lot of success with exporting videos from PowerPoint, so I use different programs now to do it instead of spending too much time trying to make it work.

Tips for BNI Presentation Showcase

Main Post:

I know a few of us here are in BNI group and I want to check with you guys on the showcase slot. I have done a few showcases, the feedback I gotten was they are informative, show case my capabilities in tech, yet it doesn't seem to be relatable enough for them to refer people to me. I have sales slides, they are more for selling than educating people why I should be referred.

What do you guys do for your BNI showcase?

Top Comment:

I left my BNI group. They were all Business-to-Consumer members so the referrals weren't appropriate. We don't do personal computer work. When a fellow member was working with someone on their personal business it's often not appropriate to ask "hey does your workplace want to talk to this great IT guy?" But even if it is appropriate, the BNI members' clients were not often the choice makers for the workplace. It did help me work on my elevator pitch and presentation skills a lot though. Hopefully your area has a different member makeup.
